Virgin Australia has unveiled its new aircraft interiors for passengers flying on its long-haul international routes on board its Boeing 777s.

The new business class cabin features 37 “suites”‘ that convert to a lie-flat bed, 80 inches long (203cm) – the length of a queen-sized bed, the airline points out.

The cabin also features a 1-2-1 layout, allowing direct aisle access for all business class passengers. This is a big improvement over the previous layout of 2-3-2, which meant window seat and middle-seat passengers had restricted access to the aisle.

There’s also a new, spacious business class bar hosted by a crew member (the previous bar was self service) offering drinks and snacks during the flight.

The first revamped 777-300ER will fly from Australia to Los Angeles. The new cabin will be later be available on flights to Abu Dhabi.

In addition to the new business class redesign, Virgin has also revamped its premium economy and economy class cabins, including the addition of a new class “Economy Space +”.

The “Economy Space” seats make up the first five rows of the economy class cabin and feature extra legroom (34 inches/86 cm) as well as other benefits, such as check-in via the premium counter, dedicated crew members for the seats and noise-cancelling headphones. The seats will cost an additional $135-$165 one-way.

The premium economy cabin, renamed just “Premium”, now features 24 seats with a seat pitch of 41 inches (104 cm), which the airline says puts it ahead of any other Australian airline in terms of legroom in this class.

All five of the airline’s Boeing 777-300ER aircrafts are expected to be refitted by the third quarter of 2016.

In recent years both Virgin and Qantas have been locked in a battle for high-end customers, with revamped products both in the air and on the ground. Last year Virgin introduced a new business class seat for domestic flights and has also opened new lounges.
